New NBC Docu-Series Asks Celebrities Who Do You Think You Are?

NBC will probe into the family trees of celebrities with a new docu-series called “Who Do You Think You Are?” — and one of its producers will be one of the show’s first subjects.

Who Do You Think You Are? is scheduled to premiere at 8 p.m. ET Monday, April 20, filling out the time period after Chuck finishes its season. Former Friends star Lisa Kudrow is an executive producer of the show — which is based on a BBC series with the same name — and will also put her genealogy before the cameras in an episode.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Susan Sarandon will also take part in the show, and NBC says other celebrity participants will be named soon.

(Incidentally, the new show may not be Sarandon’s only NBC appearance this spring. She’s reportedly also making a guest appearance on one of the final episodes of ER.

The series will examine a star’s family tree and uncover stories about love, secrets and triumphs in his or her family’s past, while also weaving the family story into the larger narrative of American history.

“This show personalizes history and turns it into a gripping narrative,” Kudrow says. “The most striking thing about the show is the realization of how connected we all are.”

NBC picked up Who Do You Think You Are? nearly a year ago. The show has since been engaged in signing up celebs to take part and doing genealogical research, hence the gap between pickup and premiere.

Kudrow is executive producing the show with Alex Graham, Lucy Carter, Dan Bucatinsky and Don Roos.
