Loretta Devine could be starring in a legal drama next fall — just not the one she starred in this fall.
Devine, who’s coming off Eli Stone at ABC, has joined the cast of David E. Kelley’s pilot Legally Mad at NBC, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Her casting continues a long relationship she’s had with Kelley; she was a regular on Boston Public and made guest appearances on Ally McBeal, Boston Legal and Picket Fences.
Legally Mad is about a young lawyer (British actress Charity Wakefield) who spurns bigger offers to join the band of eccentrics at her father’s (Hugh Bonneville) firm. Devine will play one of them, an attorney who’s seemingly always on the brink of a breakdown.
The cast also includes Kristin Chenoweth and Jon Seda.
Devine is the first Eli Stone regular to take another TV job following the show’s demise. ABC still has a handful of unaired episodes in its pocket but hasn’t said if or when they will air.
