Jessica Simpson is going back in front of reality TV cameras for a VH1 series that examines the global beauty industry.

The show, called The Price of Beauty, purports to offer a serious (or at least semi-serious; this is the channel that brings you Daisy of Love and Tool Academy, after all) look at “fashions, dietary fads and beauty regimes” in various cultures. Simpson will talk to everyday women and celebrities about the pressure to look good and sometimes participate in the “extreme practices” she comes across.

“I have always believed that beauty comes from within and confidence will always make a woman beautiful, but I know how much pressure some women put on themselves to look perfect,” Simpson says. “I am really looking forward to discovering how beauty is perceived in different cultures and participating in some of the crazy things people do to feel beautiful.”

VH1’s original programming chief, Jeff Olde, says Simpson, “perhaps more than any other pop-culture figure on the radar today,” has been the subject of a national beauty obsession, e.g. the mom-jeans photo from a few months back that launched a thousand snarky blog items about her weight. That, Olde argues, makes her just the right host for the show.

“We could not be more thrilled that Jessica now gets to take control of that conversation and take a look at the idea of beauty through her own unique, unfiltered lens,” Olde says. “And we at VH1 are excited to be in the passenger seat next to her as she begins this fantastic journey.”

The Price of Beauty comes from RDF USA, the production company behind Wife Swap and FOX’s Secret Millionaire. It’s scheduled to begin filming in July and premiere next year.
